\nGreat empirical research often begins with the researchers’ curiosity about a perplexing phenomenon at hand or a deep motivation to shed light on an unexplained process in organisational life. In this talk, I will trace and unpack the steps that led from an early interest in how creative interactions (within innovation hubs, labs and entrepreneurial networks in Japan and the UK) influence emerging business models to the publication of an extensively revised, full empirical paper in the Academy of Management Journal in April 2022 (full reference below). I will revisit key steps in this process, including the initial conceptualisation of the research through a funding application, the unexpected discoveries made during fieldwork, the formation and collaborative management of our research team, and the transformation of our core research question through the revision process. It is hoped that this presentation and the discussion that follows will be particularly useful for young scholars with aspirations to publish in international journals with collaborators from Japan and overseas.<\/p>\n
